We did a look back at our year in 2019, and now we’re looking ahead to 2020. Like many people, we have done some thinking and came up with some goals for 2020 that we plan to accomplish. Some are travel-related, while others are not. Hopefully, we’re able to accomplish all these goals, but realistically, we know that we might not be able to.

Therefore, without further ado, here are some of our goals and thinking we’re looking ahead to in 2020!

Continue to Save Money

In 2019, we focused on saving money and growing our bank accounts because we knew it would help with whatever we wanted to do in the future. We want to continue to save money by not spending it on too many frivolous items in 2020, so we’ll be able to live comfortably and have the opportunity to continue to travel when the opportunity arises.

Go to More Off-the-beaten-Path Destinations

Speaking of travel, in 2020 we want to travel to some more “off-the-beaten-path” destinations. Now, we do have a few trips booked that aren’t to these off-the-beaten-path destinations for 2020 because we know people there or used credit card points to get there.

However for our other unplanned trips, we want to go to lesser known travel destinations in hopes of writing about them and making more people aware of what they have to offer and learning more about the local culture and history.

Do you have an off-the-beaten-path travel destinations you’d like us to travel to or that you’d like to go to in 2020?

Interact with Locals More

In sticking with the travel-related goals for 2020, we want to continue to interact with locals during our travels. Interacting with locals while traveling is the best way to find the most authentic food, the best nightlife, learn about the local culture and history, and even pick up a bit of the language. Plus, making those personal connections really brings people from around the world closer.

Practice Spanish More

While we are both proficient in Spanish, we would like to practice our Spanish skills more. It’s often difficult to do at home because English is our first language, and we communicate better in it. We have talked on and off over the years about how we should speak more in Spanish at home, but we never end up doing it. This year, we hope to speak more in Spanish and improve our skills in the process. Improving our Spanish will help us no matter where we end in the future and during our travels to Spanish speaking countries.

Eat Less Dairy

We have both eaten almost entirely vegetarian for the past 2 years, and completely vegetarian for the last 6 months. For January 2020, we’re doing a month totally vegan, just to try it. From there, we’ll see if we want to continue it.

Unfortunately, we live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where it is very difficult to eat out and find vegan options at most places. At home, we already eat mostly vegan, but this will be a solid month of all vegan.

Overall, our goal for 2020 is to eat less dairy though. In January, it will be none…hopefully… However for the rest of the year, it will be to just eat less in general. Most of what we currently eat is cheese, which is on everything in the dairy state that is Wisconsin.

If we stay in Wisconsin, we know this is an ambitious goal, and it will be difficult to accomplish. It’s worth a try though, especially because neither of us feel great after eating cheese…

Be More Green

In terms of being more responsible, we want to be more green. This means reducing our carbon footprint, producing less waste, and overall helping the planet as best we can. Obviously, there are thousands of ways we can be more green, but we want to really focus on producing less waste, especially plastic waste. This includes plastic bags, straws, and using any one-time use plastics in general.

While we will obviously do more than that to make the planet a better place, this is a solid goal for us because it’s a very tangible one.

Continue to Declutter

In 2020, we want to continue to declutter. It was something we did throughout 2019, but especially at the beginning of the year. We have reduced a lot of what we have. However, there’s still more we could donate, sell, and simply get rid of. It’s a lot less stressful to have fewer things, when most of those things are just stuff that’s not being used on a regular basis. We feel much more relaxed and peaceful when there’s less clutter around.

Given a variety of circumstances, we had to move 3 times in 2019, and in the process had to get rid of a lot of stuff. In 2020, there’s a good chance we’ll move again… The less stuff, the easier the move!
